It’s been almost 2 years since I’ve been hiking up Mt. Montara (mistakenly referred to as “Mt. Montana” in my journal entries for Half Dome 2006) in the Pacifica. This morning, I went back with BigMike.
I called him about 9:30AM, and I hear the groan of his voice,”It’s windy outside…”
As I listen to the howling of Mother Nature outside my window, I responded,”Yeah, it’s pretty windy. I’m still down to do this, but if you don’t want to, we can just head out to the gym.” After telling me he has to walk the dogs with Melaine first, we agreed that we’ll decide within the hour.
Two hours later, we’re on Mt. Montana arriving at what I would like to call the “first tier” overseeing Pacifica, which took us about 45 minutes to hike up to. Although, still windy, the blue sky gave us the relax calm and pride for actually having accomplished something today. Then Mike commented,”What would be good now is sandwiches and beer.”
Picking up his newly found walking stick, I’d insisted he lead us back down to civilization ’cause I get uncoordinated walking on rocky, unnatural ground, esp. when the law of gravity uninvitingly assists me. For a brief moment, I bent down to tie my shoes. And as I got back up, I noticed Mike carrying his stick and running at quite a fast pace. Bastard was either trying to ditch me, or he really was hungry for sandwich and beer.
I’ve created a category @rayhom.com titled Towards Half Dome 2008… to chronicle the journey back.
