The Song of "Weeds"

I love the songs that are picked out for each episode of Showtime’s Emmy-nominated Weeds. But, it’s the title track that I still get a kick out of – Malvina Reynolds’s “Little Boxes”:

Little boxes, on the hillside/
Little boxes made of ticky-tacky/
Little boxes on the hillside/
Little boxes, all the same/
There’s a green one and a pink one/
And a blue one and a yellow one/
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky/
And they all look just the same

And the people in the houses/
All went to the university/
Where they were put in boxes/
And they came out all the same/
And there’s doctors and lawyers/
And business executives/
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky/
And they all look just the same

And they all play on the golf-course/
And drink their Martinis dry/
And they all have pretty children/
And the children go to school/
And the children go to summer camp/
And then to the university/
Where they are put in boxes/
And they come out all the same

And the boys go into business/
And marry, and raise a family/
In boxes made of ticky-tacky/
And they all look just the same/
There’s a pink one and a green one/
And a blue one and a yellow one/
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky/
And they all look just the same

Weeds – “Nancy Botwin struggles with the sudden death of her husband and agonizes over how she’ll support and raise two young boys on her own. Without any discernable career skills, the widow Botwin finds good paying work as the local pot dealer in the pristine, new LA suburb known as Agrestic. There’s definitely a double meaning when this girl puts on her Mary Janes.”

New season starts August 13th. You better catch up on all your episodes. What’s an odd character choice news bit though, one of the Olsen twins is going to become a cast member in the upcoming Season 3(?!). Damn, those Full House girls grow up fast!

  1. Did you know that Daly City (DC) was the city that inspired the song “Little Boxes” by Malvina Reynolds? Malvina’s song was inspired when she was driving through DC with her husband down the Peninsula to La Honda. After season one, starting Season 2, the song “Little Boxes” was performed by a different artist each episode. And starting the 3rd season, they have it in Spanish version. So this song was about how “ticky tacky” the track homes of DC.

In 2006, a book called the “Little Boxes” by Rob Keil was published and it’s about the architecture of a classic midcentury suburb built by Henry Doelger. It included pictures of homes of Westlake, DC that was described in Malvina Reynolds’ “little boxes” song. Famous photographers including Ansel Adams came to the neighborhood and captured them on film back when the “ticky tacky” boxes were built. So there, Daly City isn’t so “ticky tacky” after all. I am proud to say that my parents, sister and uncle lives there.

Now back to the show Weeds. Season 1 and 2 were awsome, but stories in Season 3 has gone down the hill, so far.
