Frank Miller’s Sin City

Frank Miller’s Sin City

Get dressed. I suggest something less provacative…
Men of low character will see you tonight.

– from Sin City

What you are about to read is a small personal essay on Sin City which I had began writing god knows when, but, eventually, I was going to post it because of the “coming soon to a theatre near you” release of the film based on the series this April 1st. But, it seems like Tashie had beaten me to it on her online journal, actually crediting me as introducing her to the series in the past. Thank you, GG. Now, for those who don’t know what Sin City is, I would like to introduce it to y’all also.

Hell? You don’t know what hell is. None of you people do. Hell isn’t getting beat up or cut up or hauled in front of some faggot jury. Hell is waking up every god damn morning and not knowing why you’re even here. Why you’re even breathing.
– Marv, Sin City

Frank Miller's Sin City

It’s tough for a lot of folks to find heroes and hobbies these days… things to do to help us make it through the day… to inspire us, and instill a sense of purpose. Whether it’s through family & friends, a good book, spirituality, watching a porno… we all have needs to be fulfilled.

Frank Miller's Sin CityTherefore, this is my flaunt of my favorite of all literature known to man’s existence. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy Shakespeare, Emerson, and Twain as any intellectual would boast. Clive Barker is my favorite horror fiction writer. I shyly admit that I read Harry Potter or Dan Brown novels when free times call for it. Kevin Smith screenplays, I don’t pass up. But Frank Miller’s Sin City… oh, my goddess. I can re-read this shit over and over and over… this is the good stuff, and I’ve lost track of how many times I have re-read this series, SIN CITY: THE HARD GOODBYE, A DAME TO KILL FOR, THE BIG FAT KILL, THAT YELLOW BASTARD (My favorite!), BOOZE, BROODS, & BULLETS, FAMILY VALUES, and TO HELL AND BACK: A LOVE STORY. I’ve concluded that this is my undying favorite of all reading literature known to Man. Don’t question me. We all have our favorites.

Genius… didn’t that use to mean something?
– Wallace, Sin City: To Hell & Back

Frank Miller’s ability to tell a crime story through juxtopositioning images of black and white (with a little red and blue) entertains like a cinematic on paper, made me think of him as a genius. Who is Frank Miller? He’s a kick-ass comic book writer/illustrator who redefined the image of Batman, Spiderman, Wolverine, and Robocop, just to name a few of the bigger titles. And Sin City is his original creation.

Booze, Broads, & BulletsSo, whattafuck is so good about Sin City? I grew up like every knuckleheaded male bastard during the 80s indulging in mindless, testosterone-filled action films where the hero is a muscle-bound meathead shooting up a mass army of unseen soldiers. And Sin City freed me from that ignorance. Published by Dark Horse, Sin City began it’s first publication in 1992, and every issue, every graphic novel introduced me to the concept of the anti-hero. The good guy may have his own inner demons to fight, and that may be a good thing to motivate us into action. Relating as a human to art, and vice-versa… you begin to understand, I hope.

It really gets my goat when guys rough up dames.

Sex & ViolenceSin City inspired my writings, especially a better part of the asian american eves. It was also the inspiration for my “wisdom” tattoo of the nekkid female silouhette on my upper left arm. Sin City is what drawn me to OZ, The Shield, Nip/Tuck… Sin City is what helped me strenghten my belief that Evil does not exist. Only human flaws. Those that can overcome, and those that can’t. The survival of the fittest. Reading Sin City gives me the comfort by a good writer/ illustrator, and instills a blissful happiness that one wishes constantly in a sometimes very harsh world. Others read the Bible or their Q’uran before they go to bed. I read my Sin City.

Let it in. Suck it in and choke on it. And drown in it and die like a man. Not like some scared little catholic boy, thrashing and swiveling and praying to Jesus.
– Dwight, Sin City: The Big Fat Kill

But why am I writing about Sin City now, if it’s a series that was written over 10 years ago? Well, in Spring 2005, the film version of Sin City will be released. Originally, Frank Miller had made a comment that there will never be a Sin City movie. Which I was grateful to hear, because it was one of those things where I felt that the stories told were not for the mainstream masses’ eyes… but I was wrong.

There Is Love In The City Of SinRobert Rodriguez (Spy Kids, From Dusk ‘Til Dawn, Once Upon A Time In Mexico) in early ’94 confidently created a 10 minute short to show Miller that he had the ability to film Sin City. Somehow, Miller was convinced. With an all-star cast including Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Elijah Wood, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Clarke Duncan, Josh Hartnett, Michael Madsen, Jaime King, Brittany Murphy, Clive Owen, Mickey Rourke, Nick Stahl, Devon Aoki, Rutger Hauer, and even Frank Miller, himself. Y’all should watch it just to name who is who…

The movie, according to the cool trailer, seems to live up to the visual of the graphic comic novels themselves. It was filmed in three parts, and supposedly, Quentin Tarantino paid Rodriguez a buck to direct the third sequence. This movie has got to be good. Sometimes, I think I’m ready to die…

And FYI, SinCin has nothing to do with Sin City.
So, stop asking me!
